“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”– Plato

Light is defined as the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible. We think of light as a safe way to illuminate our way. It helps us see danger, be it a stray lego or an on coming car as we cross the street at night. There is the soft glow of a flickering candle as you look across the table at your lover or the harsh, cold glare of a florescent light when it’s “last call” at 3 am.

Sometimes light can be scary because it shines on places that we aren’t proud of or we have masked or denied. It’s kinda like opening a kitchen cupboard and seeing cock roaches running all over when you turn on the light. Your fears are nocturnal and when that “light” goes off or on…YIKES! Is that me…what the hell am I doing here?  My life has responded to light / reality once the “light” went on. Some times it was a warm beautiful glow and other times it was “full on florescent!”

We all have to find that light of hope in our own “wattage” and time. I have someone very special to me struggling with his demons. There is nothing so beautiful as to see him flip that “light switch” on. What a gift it is to witness. Now the hard work begins…but with a clear vision the path will be not as scary as living in the darkness and denial.

This day I give thanks to God and Thomas Edison for their “Light” .. I want to celebrate the journey from our own darkness into the light of a beautiful day.
