“Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it.”– Bill Crosby

I’m reading Bossypants by Tina Fey…I’m sure the people beside me on the bus or at the swimming pool think I’m crazy because this book is so funny I’m laughing and giggling out loud as I read it. I simply don’t know where I’d be without humor in my life. There is nothing better then a huge burst of insane irreverent laughs…the kind that builds with a little giggle and a glance and before you know it you are on the floor laughing so hard you are crying and wetting your pants. Side splitting, gut aching, I can’t breath laughter. There is nothing short of the big “O” that releases such joy and endorphins then finding humor along with laughter.

Humor, laughter and sharing it has been so healing for me along my journey. Try sitting at a dinner table with 6 siblings when someone drops the dare…”OK, see who can go the longest without laughing or saying a word.”…insanity prevails as we try to get the other to be the first to burst out laughing with a mouthful of mashed potatoes and milk spewing from their nasal passages. Poor Vera and Ray didn’t know if they should yell or laugh.

Sometimes the heavy sadness of the situation calls for a light heartedness or it just comes over you at what some might think inappropriate but for me…just the right time.  I remember when I was riding in the car with my sister Lorrie  right after Clyde died. We were going to pick out the plot where he would be buried. I was completely numb but in that moment as I thought of Clyde I kinda giggled and leaned over to Lorrie and said..”You know how Clyde hated crowds so let’s make sure he isn’t too close to any other people.” and we both just burst out giggling. The day of funeral I was standing with my son Kurt on one side and daughter Deena on the other while the final prayer is being said over the grave when Kurt and I both noticed at the same time one lone mosquito buzzing in front of us. I looked at Kurt and Kurt looked at me and I leaned over to whisper in Kurt’s ear..”.Oh man…if we bury Clyde with a skeeter he is going to be pissed as hell!” Kurt said “We should have brought his can of Heavy Duty OFF to bury with him.” We smiled at one another. It somehow felt like a beautiful way to honor Clyde.

Humor is a life saver for us in many ways. As we start the weekend I hope you have days filled with laughs and humorous moments. Go out and look for those moments or better yet…you be the humor that life needs. Peace out.
