“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light and where there is sadness, joy.”– St Francis of Assisi

Raymond Anthony Ambrose…son, brother, husband, father, uncle, coach, teacher, friend, cement finisher, soldier, and just a cool cat. As we honored fathers yesterday I want to tip my hat to our Dad…”Pappa Ray” as he is fondly remembered by my of his students and athletes.

He could put the fear of God in 7 kids with just the raising of his left eyebrow. He had a heart of gold when he looked over at the love of his life Vera. I never leave a room with a light on as I hear him saying…”TURN that light off…what am I lighting all of northwest Davenport.” I never use the word bored because if he heard us say that during the summer we would hear him ask..”What was the last book you read? Go down to the basement and find  one of those Zane Grey books to read if you are so bored.” Before we left the dinner table we heard…”What we talk about at this dinner table doesn’t leave this kitchen.”  He never allowed us to us the words “I’ll kill you” when we were angry and fighting it out with one another. “If you had to kill another person…you would feel differently about those words…He had been a POW in WWII at 19.

He left his 7 kids with many “Ray”isms…but if I had to describe the heart and soul of my Dad it is the above prayer by St Francis. I feel so fortunate to have been born into the arms of Ray Ambrose and Vera Madden. I hope I am living your legacy and passing it on to others.
