“Seek not that the things which happen should happen as you wish; but wish the things which happen to be as they are, and you will have a tranquil flow of life.”– Epictetus

Such a pretty sight as I walked over the Kinzie bridge. The parade of paddlers enjoying a lazy summer evening on the Chicago River. Give me a slow stroke of an oar or a paddle on the water. The happiest day I had while living on White Bear Lake was the day I sold a jet boat and then the ski boat. Maybe you have to grow up being a boater…I just never embraced boating. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a nice sunset cruise around the lake with a glass of wine…on SOME ONE ELSES boat! I loved sitting at the end of the dock waving at all the boaters speeding by. Lots of work being a boat owner when it is far more fun to jump in a canoe or a kayak and go at your own speed…human powered.

The view is so much more interesting being one with the water moving at your speed and not the speed of a motor. Quiet and peaceful…listening to the water lapping on the side of your vessel or the sound of the paddle pushing against the water…very soothing. But no matter what mode of boating you use…it is important to respect the elements that might come up…winds may shift…clouds mount followed by lightening and thunder. On the water is not where you want to be!

In life as on the water….we can glide along and go with the flow…but there will be more likely then not a “storm” of some sort on the horizon of life. Be it a sick parent or child, job loss, bad report from the doctor, troubled teen…. whatever it is…Prepare…grap a” life “preserver ( family friends, counselor…who or whatever you need)…wait out the storm…hold on tight…trust…have faith…pray…meditate. The storm will calm, the sun will shine again and the flow of life will return.

Is today the day you set sail or anchor yourself?
