“The best things in life are never rationed. Friendship, loyalty, love do not require a coupon.”

I walk over the Kenzie Street bridge daily on my way to workout. For weeks now I have been watching these Canadian geese perched atop the wood pilings. Momma is hunkered down on her nest on one piling and Papa is standing watch on the other. A gaggle of goslings can’t be far behind.

Canadian Geese mate for life. We used to live on a lake in Minnesota and saw first hand this beautiful show of love, loyalty and proud parenting year after year. Every spring with Mom in the front and Papa in the rear, we’d watch as they swam with their goslings in formation. There would always be a furry baby that loved to swim off on its own…but Mom or Dad were there to shuffle them back “in line” much like in a human family. You never saw one goose without the other. My son Kurt found out the hard way NOT to mess with a baby goose with Mom close by…I never saw him run so fast.

There is nothing so beautiful then to watch couples devoted and loyal to one another in good times and especially in the bad times. They work together instead of apart. They show a united force when disciplining and setting boundaries for their kids then sticking to it. Nothing makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up more then when I hear parents say, “Oh my (insert name) is my best friend!” Our kids need parents not a “friend.” There is plenty of time once they are adults to be friends.

Love and loyalty is a beautiful thing to watch in nature and in life. I will keep you posted on the new “arrival”…it shouldn’t be long now.
